Electron Microscopy Technician | Human Technopole, Milan

Build the science that shapes the future of human health.
Application closing date: 28.02.2026

Join a place where ambitious science thrives
Human Technopole (Milan) is a rapidly expanding life science institute where international researchers and cutting-edge technologies converge to accelerate biomedical discovery. Our mission is to transform bold scientific ideas into advances that improve human health.

Within this mission, the National Facility for Structural Biology provides state-of-the-art technologies, advanced instrumentation and scientific expertise to support internal and external researchers in the structural and molecular characterization of biological systems.

Within this framework, the Cryo-Electron Microscopy Unit, part of the National Facility for Structural Biology, seeks to recruit an Electron Microscopy (EM) Technician, reporting to the Head of the Facility, to operate and support Single-Particle Applications. The successful candidate will actively contribute to the operation and maintenance of the Unit, participate in scientific collaborations, and support both internal and external users through the National Facility Access scheme.

Your mission
Your mission is to ensure the scientific and operational excellence of the Unit by driving complex laboratory operations and enabling high-quality experimental research. The activities of the EM Technician will focus on single-particle applications, including sample preparation by negative staining and plunge freezing, imaging by TEM and STEM at room and cryogenic temperatures on both side-entry and autoloader equipped systems, and all related applications and software (e.g. SerialEM and Thermo Scientific EPU, Tomography, Velox and MAPS). The EM Technician will report directly to Head of the National Facility for Structural Biology and will work in close collaboration with other Units of the National Facility and research groups of the Structural Biology Research Centre. On top of these, the EM Technician will also perform and be responsible for the following activities:

  • Actively participate in resource planning and maintenance of the Cryo-EM Unit equipment, tools and consumables;
  • Introduce, train and supervise internal and external users to sample preparation, equipment operations and provide evaluation support;
  • Interaction with users to facilitate their access, and provide technical assistance during the project and feedback after delivery of results;
  • Perform experiments and provide services for non-autonomous users according to the Unit and National Facility best practices;
  • Interact and follow up with manufacturers and field service engineers in case of technical issues and malfunctions of the Unit equipment and tools;
  • Interact and follow up with the ICT and Digitisation Area, Campus Development and Facility Management Area in case of building issues and malfunctions;

Grow your skills
You will enhance your scientific and professional skills by working at the forefront of structural biology technologies within a highly collaborative and international research environment. You will gain hands-on experience with advanced instrumentation, innovative experimental workflows and digital platforms supporting facility operations. Through close interaction with scientists, technology experts and external partners, you will expand your technical expertise, consultancy capabilities and contribution to high-impact research projects.

Human Technopole supports career development through training, mentoring and dedicated learning opportunities.
