Job Description
Bioinformatician/Senior Bioinformatician Functional Genomics Research Centre

Bioinformatician/Sr. Bioinformatician - Functional Genomics Research Centre|Human Technopole, Milan

Build the science that shapes the future of human health.

Application closing date: 15.03.2026

Join a place where ambitious science thrives
Human Technopole (Milan) is a rapidly expanding life science institute where international researchers and cutting-edge technologies converge to accelerate biomedical discovery. Our mission is to transform bold scientific ideas into advances that improve human health.

The Centre for Genomics – Functional Programme aims to elucidate the function of the human genome in health and disease. The Centre places a strong emphasis on understanding genomic regulation at sub-cellular and cellular levels, and its impact on development and function at tissue, organ, and whole-organism scales.

The Computation Unit is deeply integrated with the research groups across the Programme, and benefits from access to large-scale high-performance computing and data storage infrastructure, as well as close interaction with a vibrant community of computational biologists across Human Technopole.

We are seeking a Bioinformatician/Senior Bioinformatician to contribute to the analysis, processing, and interpretation of large-scale functional genomics datasets, supporting projects from data generation to publication

Your Mission

You will design and operate state-of-the-art computational workflows for functional genomics and will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of key datasets. A central mission of the role is to ensure timely, high-quality processing and delivery of analyzed data for large-scale projects, in close collaboration with Investigators within the Programme and across other Research Centres.

The candidate will also contribute to the development of new methods and to the rapid standardization and implementation of computational approaches for emerging technologies. Reproducibility, robustness, and best practices in bioinformatics analyses—using standardized, modular workflows—will be core to this position.

We welcome applications from both senior and junior candidates. Junior candidates are expected to demonstrate strong motivation and solid foundations in computational analysis, with the willingness to further develop their skills in functional genomics.

The successful candidate will report to the Head of the Research Centre for Genomics – Functional Programme.

Grow your skills

You will enhance your scientific and professional skills by working with:

  • Design, implement, and operate robust bioinformatics pipelines for functional genomics and transcriptomics, including bulk, single-cell, spatial and multi-omics datasets, using short- and long-read sequencing technologies.
  • Perform in-depth analyses of complex genomics datasets (e.g. transcript isoforms, regulatory elements, RNA translation, chromatin and 3D genome assays, interactomes), in close collaboration with experimental researchers.
  • Provide hands-on support, training, and mentorship to students and staff on bioinformatics methods, workflows, and best practices in reproducible research.
  • Develop, adapt, and standardize computational workflows for emerging experimental technologies.
  • Manage the collection, harmonization, annotation, and reuse of external datasets (e.g. ENCODE, Human Cell Atlas, FANTOM and related resources).
  • Curate and maintain internally generated genomic datasets, ensuring high-quality metadata, reproducibility of analyses, and preparation of data for deposition in public repositories.
  • Contribute to the development of shared computational resources, databases, and user-friendly tools for data exploration and dissemination.
  • Contribute to grant applications, project reports, and scientific publications.

Human Technopole supports career development through training, mentoring and dedicated learning opportunities.

What you'll bring

Essential:

  • MSc or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related quantitative life science discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data and functional genomics datasets.
  • Excellent proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R) and strong familiarity with Unix/Linux environments and HPC systems.
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute

Preferred:

  • Experience with functional genomics assays, such as:
    • isoform-level RNA analysis, Ribo-seq, long read RNA and cDNA sequencing.
    • chromatin assays (e.g. ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, Hi-C and related 3D genome methods)
    • single-cell and spatial transcriptomics
  • Experience with reproducible workflows and software development (e.g. git, Nextflow, Snakemake, containerization).
  • Experience with software packages to efficiently handle different genomic annotations and data formats (e.g. Bioconductor).Familiarity with imaging or microscopy data analysis.
  • Interest or experience in machine learning or AI applied to biological data.

Required personal skills:

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solid troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently on complex analytical tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to lead and gain the assistance and cooperation of others in a team endeavor. Willingness to train, lead, and mentor colleagues.
  • Ability to build trust through operating with transparency and creating an open and positive environment.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
